Negotiating the Distance
The Heart’s Journey

Over the course of four years, this concert wowed Grande Prairie audiences with its stories of heartache, hell-raising and healing. Incorporating as many as 18 artists, who spanned more than four decades in age, this annual event helped raise awareness of domestic violence issues in the Peace Country. In 2007 the show went in a new direction with stunning success. Incorporating the stories of women who had required the support of Odyssey House Emergency Shelter, eight artists retold the stories through poetry, music, painting, story and dance to a sold-out show at Second Street Theatre. What began as conversation at a DandyLioness band practice grew into a community development and empowerment project which has ongoing reverberations.

On November 19, 2007 the DandyLionesses were the recipients of the Passionate Heart Award from Grande Prairie Family and Community Services for their work on the Heart’s Journey.

Grande Prairie Womansong and Women in the Park

Womansong started when the DandyLionesses asked all the female performers they knew if they would like to play some songs as part of a Women in the Park afternoon in Grande Prairie’s beautiful Muskoseepi Park. More than 14 performers participated. A comraderie was formed and plans were made for a January concert. Tickets were sold out a week before and people were scrambling to find a way to get to the all woman concert. With original music that spans genres and generations, Womansong is, quite simply, women sharing their songs while supporting one another in the process.

The Power of the Land- November 2 at the Douglas Cardinal Theatre.

The DandyLionesses are behind yet another ground-breaking project that partners local artists with local farmers, environmental organizations and food enthusiasts. We will share a story with our neighbours about the power of the land and the role we can all play in sustaining the connections that enable us to thrive on the planet. We will engage all the senses in a presentation that will move audiences to honour the relationships that have made possible our communities and very existence.

The GP Ink Review of the show by Diana Rinne, November 12, 2007

“I had the chance to attend the Power of the Land fundraising concert for the Grande Prairie Farmer’s Market last week and was absolutely wowed. ...The audience was completely appreciative not only of the talents but also the message brought to light by this production. The farmers and ranchers of the Peace Country are an integral part of our community. It’s a fact that sometimes gets forgotten by those of us caught up in the busy buzz of the city.”

Womansong Cabin Fever Festival-February 2008

So here’s the deal. We don’t just want to do a concert this year, we want to do a mini-festival at the community village that involves women artists, writers and musicians sharing their creative energy and friends to fend off the winter blues. Anyone interested in participating in this event in any way: sponsorship, artistic expression, volunteering, etc. should let us know asap! the dandylionesses the message

Staunch defenders of weeds everywhere. Musically opposing the toxic giants who would turn our land, women, children, men, animals, music, culture, fashion, attitudes, beliefs and talents into deathly monocultures. We will not stand by and let this quietly happen. No! We will sing out our message across the land to unconventional melodies, to unconventional audiences, in unconventional places. We are the DandyLionesses!
